I have a new obsession that I'm ready to share with the world. It all started 2 years ago when I bought Woobles kits as stocking stuffers. They're adorable and I mostly bought them because I wanted one! I crocheted a bunny. It was a struggle at first, I had no idea what I was doing and I was often frustrated. That said, the videos were helpful and I persevered. I gave the bunny to my niece. And then I fixed the bunny when one eye fell out! A beginner mistake.
A year passed and I bought myself a puzzle advent calendar. What does that have to do with crocheting, you ask? A fair question! I found the puzzle calming and meditative. It provided a daily moment of peace in a very busy time of the year. I loved it. But, I'm not a huge puzzle person. I find the obviousness of their futility bothersome. I mean, technically, everything is futile. Maybe even meaningless. But to put a puzzle back in a box after carefully completing it just feels like you're giving up on life. What is the point of anything, really?!
When 2024 arrived, cold and dark, I missed the peaceful moments of puzzle making. To fill that spot I signed up for a crochet blanket kit from Annie's. Every two weeks they sent me a package with supplies, they provided videos, and I worked on one square at a time until I finished a whole beautiful blanket! I find crocheting meditative, calming, challenging and when I'm done I don't unravel it back into balls of yarn! No! I have a finished blanket. A gorgeous blanket that I made by hand in stolen moments over many weeks!
Inevitably, when that blanket was complete I was left, once again, feeling lost and directionless. Yes, I had crocheted a couple of scarves in the meantime. But there's something about getting yarn in the mail on a regular basis that filled me with joy and energy. So I ordered a second blanket kit. I completed that one just weeks ago and I now feel like a fully intermediate crochet person. Hooray!
From what I understand my next steps will include hoarding yarn, finding patterns that I'll likely never complete, and imagining insane projects like making a blanket for each of my kids, nephews, and niece! I'm on it.
